Situated in the northwest plateau of Yunnan Provience, Lijiang covers a total area of 7,648 square kilometers, all of it surrounded by tree-covered mountains and crystal clear waters.The temperatures range from 9.9 degrees Celsius to 12.6 degrees Celsius, depending on the season. The Naxi people constitute over half of the local population and mainly practice the Dongba religion and Lamaism.Since the late Song and Yuan dynasty, Lijiang has been an important political, cultural, and educational center.It was and still is an important trading post for Yunnan, Tibet, and India.
Lijiang ancient town was also recently recognized as a part of the Historical and Cultural Heritage in China.Lijiang is widely renowned for unique and organized layout of its city.The most noteworthy spectacle in the city is Sifang Street, which connects every corner of the city.Other sites of possible interest include the southbound Changjiang River, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.
