Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square forms the exact centre of Beijing, and is the largest square in the world. Originally the main gate to the Forbidden City, it now houses many important buildings, and leads to the tourist entrance to the Forbidden City. Many important festivals are celebrated here and there it is always a great place to experience Beijing culture.
Tiananmen Square is an impressive sight, with the majestic Tiananmen Towers, Mao Zedongs Mausoleum, the National Museum of China and the great Hall of the People all with its vast open space. Its splendor and importance attracts thousands of tourists, both domestic and international, everyday. Its historic role as the place of the declaration of the foundation the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, its current monuments and buildings and the proximity to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square can be seen as the heart of ancient Imperial China and of the modern Peoples Republic of China.
